Common Issues

Carbon Dioxide

“Our Carbon Monoxide alarm has gone off.”

Open windows and doors to ventilate the area, safely put your fire out and arrange an appointment to have the issue investigated (or turn the gas off and call your gas engineer.

DO NOT relight your appliance until the issue has been identified and resolved.

Birds Nesting

Significantly reduce the risk of birds (or squirrels) nesting in your chimney by having a guard fitted.

There is still a minimal risk of insects such as wasps, hornets, bees or ants making a home in your chimney (another reason for having your chimney swept regularly).

Damp

Damp in and around your chimney can cause mould and other associated problems, go to our Damp page for some guidance.

Smell of Smoke

“I can smell smoke upstairs when I have a fire downstairs.”

Call your sweep to offer advice on likely causes and ways to solve it for you. Do not use your fire until it is resolved as you could release more dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide into your property.

Chimney Smokes

“My chimney smokes.”

This can be caused by being blocked, partially sooted up or if there have been recent renovations to your property or your neighbours property.

A site visit may be necessary but often a conversation to establish the prevailing circumstances will resolve the issue.

Tar

“I am getting a lot of tar down my chimney.”

This may be due to burning the wrong fuel or the fuel is excessively damp.

Call us for free help and advice on how to resolve issues caused by tar, creosote, blockages and prevent it happening again.
